Bumpy but endearing.. It probably sounded like a swell idea in the pitch meeting.. The Princess Diaries is a march through the swamp of recycled ugly duckling stories, with occasional pauses in the marsh of sitcom cliches and the bog of Idiot Plots.. Gina Wendkos' script, based on Meg Cabot's novel, leaves much to be desired.. The movie is one to savor for its good humor and big heart, despite some hackneyed fairy-tale notions.. A surprisingly sophisticated comedy.. Not unbearably terrible, just...
